Tesla Delays Optimus Humanoid Robot Deliveries Until Late 2027

Elon Musk cites persistent issues with hand durability and AI generalization as the primary reasons for the postponed external rollout.

Elon Musk has officially pushed the timeline for Tesla’s Optimus humanoid robot, stating that external customers will not receive units until the end of 2027. During the company’s Q3 2026 earnings call, Musk acknowledged that significant hurdles remain in the robot’s hand design, overall durability, and artificial intelligence capabilities. This delay marks another shift in the ambitious schedule originally proposed for the general-purpose robot.

Tesla has begun early production of the Optimus on its high-volume line at the Fremont factory, a site previously dedicated to Model S and Model X vehicles. While most of the assembly infrastructure intended for a one-million-unit annual capacity is already installed, Musk noted that reaching the target rate of approximately 20,000 units per week will require at least another year. He attributed this extended ramp-up period to ongoing changes in the robot’s design specifications.

The primary technical challenges identified by Musk include the AI architecture, electromechanical design, and long-term reliability. A key concern is ensuring the robot does not wear out after just one month of continuous use. Tesla plans to address the lack of real-world data by building between 10,000 and 20,000 units for an internal "Optimus Academy," where the robots will practice tasks to improve their learning capabilities. Additionally, the company intends to integrate its AI5 chip into the Optimus platform around April 2027.

The hand mechanism remains the most difficult hardware component to finalize. A Tesla Optimus engineer highlighted the hand and custom gears as the areas facing the greatest reliability concerns. Musk explained that the fingers must be soft enough to handle delicate objects while enduring constant mechanical wear, a challenge compounded by the fact that robots cannot heal like human skin. The company also promised to release a video within the next one to two months demonstrating the robot performing unscripted tasks, aiming to dispel perceptions that previous demos were merely scripted routines.

Competitors in the humanoid space are progressing on similar timelines, challenging Musk’s assertion that no one is close to Tesla. XPeng activated an automated production line for its IRON robot in Guangzhou in September, with over 80% of core processes automated. XPeng targets mass production by the end of 2026 and deliveries in the first half of 2027, starting with retail environments. Similarly, Boston Dynamics has committed all of its 2026 Atlas deployments, including to Google DeepMind, and is training the robots at Hyundai’s Metaplant in Georgia to sequence car parts.

The delay brings the current timeline into alignment with previous projections that have slipped repeatedly. In 2024, Musk suggested high-volume production for other companies in 2026, a target that has since moved to late 2027. Tesla’s own shareholder letter now describes the current Fremont output as the first "production-quality" bots manufactured, implying that earlier units did not meet that standard. As the industry grapples with the same fundamental problems of hand durability and AI generalization, the coming months will be critical in determining whether Tesla’s late-2027 target holds firm.
